What is a natural flavor, natural flavoring drops

Let's start by defining what a flavor is first, then lets proceed with the most familiar definition in flavoring: natural and wrap it up with natural/artificial to cover that description as well.  That will make you an informed consumer.  Remember this after reviewing the information.  There is only three ways to describe flavoring, excluding spices which we will cover our savory flavorings.

1-FDA Definition; Natural Flavor:                                                            Essential oil [1], oleresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plat material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof whose significant function is flavoring rather than nutritional.

Phew, now you have the office definition of natural flavors.  Natural flavoring is can only be used when there are no other artificial flavors included.  That sure seems simpler but now let's read on for artificial flavorings.  I think it's a little more straight forward then the natural flavor definition.

2- FDA Definitions; Artificial Flavor:                                                                                                   Any substance used to impact flavor that is not derived from a spice, fruit, fruit juice, vegetable, vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark root, leaf or familiar plant material, meat fish, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof.

3-Finally there is Artificial/Natural: using a combination of natural flavorings and artificial flavorings.

During our training in the world of flavors, we came to learn plenty of confusing descriptors that are not really flavor definitions.

  • "All natural"- just does not exit
  • "Pure flavoring"- not sure where this comes from or what it means since it is not a FDA description
  • "Highly concentrated flavoring"
  • "Flavorful premium oils"
  • "Highly concentrated pure flavoring"

There is only three ways the FDA has approved to describe flavoring as mentioned above, excluding spices which we will cover our savory flavorings. Make sure you know what you are buying and what they mean whey the define a products flavoring this way.
