Drinking Water Helps You Lose Weight: Reported By NBC Today’s Show Health Study

August 24th, 2010 · No Comments

I just saw a great segment on the Today Show related to water and weight loss.

Can drinking water shed some weight? Drinking eight glasses of water a day is the mantra to maintain good heath, but now new research shows: drinking water before a meal can actually lead to weight loss.

In a health study segment, Matt Lauer and Dr. Nancy Snyderman, NBC’s Chief Medical Editor review a new health study titled: Drinking helps you lose weight. The segment goes on to say: drinking water for weight loss has always been talked about anecdotally-Dr. Snyderman calls it an urban myth. But now there is a randomized, controlled, clinical trial that proves the point. Nancy states- we now have science saying “yes” the urban myth is true. If you drink two glasses of water before a meal, you will consume between 75-90 less calories for that meal.

Drinking water has virtually nothing to do with boosting your metabolism. It simply has to do with making your stomach feel full. Drinking water expands your stomach tricking the brain into thinking your full so that you eat less.

The study ran for 12 weeks and divided people into two groups: those that drank two glasses of water before their meals lost 5 pounds more than their counter parts who did not. The best news is- they were able to keep it off.

Your body is made up of 60-75% water. The inherent benefit of drinking water is that water delivers essential elements and nutrients throughout the body. Water also works as the transport for body waste removal.

The second component of the story goes on to say when you drink water; you avoid sugary beverages loaded with calories or diet beverages loaded with artificial sweeteners. Losing the extra weight is about the purity of water, whether your choice is tap or bottled.

In closing, you can do the math. If they lost 5 pounds in just 12 weeks…
